In collaboration with Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa (NPI-Africa) is a peace resource organization that has been involved in various aspects of peace building and conflict transformation in Central,East and West Africa.
Target
The course targets actors within NGOs and faith based institutions interested in understanding conflict, work in conflict settings or intend to include conflict sensitivity in programming.
Course Objectives:
• To provide opportunities for peace practitioners to learn peace building, and conflict transformation
skills focusing on an exploration of the value base of faith in peace building.
• To equip them on global perspective of conflicts in Africa.
• The theories and practice of conflict, conflict analysis, conflict resolution, and skills of peace building, and an examination of the realities of post accord periods in Africa.
Course Content:
Module 1: Christian Theological foundations for peace-building and conflict resolution
• The Christian foundation of peace and reconciliation.
• Understanding the concepts of peace, justice and reconciliation.
• Conflict resolution and social justice principles and examples in the Bible.
• Strategic advantages of the church.
• Inter-church and interfaith relations and coordination fro peace building.
• Church state relations, lobbying and advocacy for justice and peace
• Application in participants’ settings.
Module 2: Understanding and contextualising conflicts in Africa
• Images of Africa in the world.
• Conflicts in Africa; Historical perspectives on the entrenchment of violence.
• Current African and global trends(trade,debt,politics,globalization).
• Prospects for peace and development.
• Prospects for political and economic renewal.
• Application in participants’ settings.
Module 3: Conflict Resolution and Peace building Interventions: Approaches and Skills
• Concepts of conflict resolution.
• Theories of third party intervention.
• The continuum of conflict resolution strategies.
• Mediation.
• Skills needed to mediate in social conflicts.
• Exploration of indigenous mechanisms and third party intervention.
• Application in participants setting.
Module 4: After Agreements: Sustainable Justice, peace and reconciliation
• The nature of negotiated peace.
• The cycle of conflict;understanding peace agreement as the beginning of ‘conflict prevention.’
• Transitional justice; practice and dilemmas.
• Dealing with victims; trauma awareness and healing.
• Dealing with perpetrators;reintegrating former fighters and meeting people’s needs
• Reconciliation;Various perspectives and traditions, and its application at various levels.
